Winter Surfing in Northern Portugal: The Honest Guide Nobody Gives You

Often, when people talk about surfing in Portugal, the spotlight immediately turns to the Algarve, Ericeira or Peniche. But anyone who really knows the ocean is in on a well-kept secret: winter in northern Portugal offers some of the best and most consistent waves in the country.
Whether you’re planning your next surf trip or want to keep improving during the winter months, this is the honest, no-nonsense guide to what you can expect.

The Reality of Water (And How Not to Feel the Cold)

Let’s be honest: the water in the North is cold. In winter, the water temperature is around 12°C to 14°C.
Does that sound daunting? It shouldn’t. These days, wetsuit technology has completely changed the game.

  • The Right Gear: A good 4/3mm or 5/4mm wetsuit with sealed seams (preferably with an internal thermal lining) is more than enough to keep you comfortable for hours in the water.
  • Essential gear: Neoprene boots are highly recommended for January and February. If you’re particularly sensitive to the cold, a hood and gloves will ensure you can keep your focus 100% on the waves.

Why Choose the North in Winter?

  1. Consistency: Winter brings stronger, cleaner swells from the North Atlantic. Whilst in summer the beaches can have days with little swell, winter guarantees action almost every day for all ability levels; we have many beaches with breakwaters, so even when the swells are large, there is always a safer option with smaller waves.
  2. Fewer People (Less Crowded Beaches): Forget the hassle of fighting for every wave with thirty others
people. Up north, the surfing community is genuine and there’s room for everyone to develop at their own pace.
  3. Unspoilt Landscapes: The contrast between the rough sea and the beaches and cliffs of the north creates a mystical and invigorating atmosphere that you won’t find in the south.
