Just 30 minutes from Porto, Vila do Conde and Azurara are two of the less touristy shores on the north coast of Portugal. Where most visitors make a quick stopover, three days is enough to get to know a piece of coastline where people still live to the rhythm of the sea, with wide beaches, historical heritage and a nature reserve on the doorstep.
This itinerary works for couples, solo travellers and anyone looking to relax without having to rush around.
Where to stay
The coastal zone between Azurara, Árvore and Mindelo is the quietest option - out of the centre, but with everything within 5 or 10 minutes. Our guesthouse is located on this strip, directly on the Atlantic walkway, with the beach in front and the centre of Vila do Conde 3 km away. For those arriving without a car, we offer transfer from Porto airport.
Day 1 - Historic Vila do Conde
Morning - Historic centre
Start with Monastery of Santa Clara, the city's landmark, overlooking the River Ave. Follow the historic centre until Mother Church, in the Manueline style, and the Santa Clara Aqueduct - one of the largest on the Iberian Peninsula.
Lunch - Waterfront
Vila do Conde is a city of fishermen. Fresh fish, caldeirada and seafood rice are safe options in any restaurant by the river.
Afternoon - Shipyards and Shipbuilding Museum
Vila do Conde's naval tradition is unique in Portugal. O 16th century ship (navigable replica) and the adjacent museum explain why.
Late afternoon - Fort of St John the Baptist
Sunset over the Atlantic at the mouth of the River Ave. If you want to explore the region in a historical context, we also offer guided tours of northern Portugal.
Day 2 - Azurara and the coast
Morning - Azurara
Cross the river to Azurara. The town has one of the most beautiful parish churches in the region (Igreja de Santa Maria, Manueline) and a completely different character - more fishing, more peaceful. The Atlantic walkway starts here and extends to the north of Vila do Conde, passing along the entire coastline.
Afternoon - Beach and sea
Free afternoon at the beach. If you've never surfed before, it's a good time to try one out. surf lessons for beginners - the beaches between Azurara and Mindelo are ideal for getting started. If you already have experience, you can use our surf equipment hire and go straight into the water.
A calmer alternative: stand up paddle tour on the river or the coast.
Late afternoon - Yoga
To round off the day, a yoga session sea front. Book direct with the guesthouse.
Day 3 - Nature and discovery
Morning - Mindelo Ornithological Reserve
5 minutes from the guesthouse, the Mindelo Ornithological Reserve was the first of its kind in Portugal. Trails through the dunes and pine forest, migratory bird watching and a silence that's rare this close to the city. Take binoculars if you have them.
Lunch - Local pub
Lunch in a tavern in Mindelo or Azurara. Sardines, grilled octopus, francesinha à moda do Porto if it's your first time in the region.
Afternoon - Porto 25 minutes away
If you still have energy, the Porto is 25 minutes away by car or train (São Bento station direct). Afternoon visit to Ribeira, Lello bookshop or Port wine tasting in Gaia.
Alternative: stay on the beach and relax. Three days is enough for both options.

Is Vila do Conde worth it for 3 days or is it too much? Three days is the ideal balance: you can visit the historic centre, the coast and even take a little trip to the Mindelo Reserve or Porto.
What's the best time of year to visit? May, June and September have the best compromise between weather and less crowds. July and August are good for the beach but are busier.
Can I do this route without a car? Yes. Train to Vila do Conde, transfer from the airport to the guesthouse, and bicycle or Uber for short journeys.
